A vinyl wrap is a giant sticker that changes the exterior color of your car or truck. A vinyl wrap should cover all visible exterior paint, the factory body color may be visible inside the mirrors or on the underside of bumpers where it is not visible. Vinyl wraps do not cover door jambs unless specified. Vinyl wraps are not intended to protect the paint or body of the vehicle from impacts, but may protect paint from oxidation and washing scratches. Color Paint Protection Film (CPPF) is all of the above, but it IS designed to protect from rock chips and light impacts.
CPPF is a TPU film (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) that has a layer of automotive paint resin infused into it. This is the future of auto wrapping. CPPF offers all of the benefits of vinyl with added durability and paint protection properties. The colors and finishes can be much more vibrant and paint-like compared to vinyl. CPPF is twice as expensive, but it also lasts twice as long and has many more benefits like paint protection and hydrophobic properties (like ceramic coating) .
Standard vinyl films are generally warrantied by the manufacturer for at least 2 years. Most vinyl wraps will last 3-5 years depending on the care, storage, and usage of the vehicle. Color PPF lasts MUCH longer, it is warrantied for at least 5 years and can last up to ten years with proper care and storage.
I still believe in the value of a handshake and my word is my bond. My work is warrantied for one year. If there is a problem with the installation, it will generally show up within a week. If there is a problem with the wrap I want to be your first call, even after the warranty period! Whether it was caused by an installation issue, or you backed into a mailbox, I'll work with you to get it fixed.
Ceramic coating is a hard, clear ceramic layer that is applied on top of factory clear coat, or vinyl wrap, PPF, or CPPF. The coating fills in the pores in the surface and creates a hard, flat surface on a microscopic level. This allows water droplets to "bead up" and roll off the surface much more easily, and enhances the gloss of the paint or film, eliminating the need for waxing. Ceramic coatings protect your paint from light scratches and oxidation caused by UV exposure, bird droppings, and chemicals like salt spray, as well as making the vehicle much easier to wash. Ceramic coatings can last up to two years.
Short answer is yes. As a rule of thumb, any scratch that you can feel will show through wrap. In order to wrap over flaking or failing paint, the bad paint must be removed and "feathered" down. Give me a call or email to talk about repair options!
